Stuart Grant is the son of David Grant, who started and still runs Highland Stoneware in Lochinver. This gave an early start in the world of ceramics and a good grounding in the processes involved. The clay, glazes and reduction firing technique used are the same as those at Highland Stoneware. With a busy pottery literally on the doorstep as a child there were always opportunities earning some money cleaning shelves, a skill that has since left me. By working at the pottery over summers and learning a variety of different jobs and skills, a general picture of what was involved in making a living from ceramics was formed. Foolishly this warning was not heeded, and after gaining an under utilised degree in physics and working for a year at Highland Stoneware, it was back to Glasgow. When in Glasgow in 2002 a workspace within Glasgow Ceramic Studio was obtained. This is an invaluable facility that has workspaces at an affordable rate for a wide range of people. The studio gives access to kilns and equipment that would be prohibitively expensive for a start up before you find out if people will buy your work. Some of the seeds of the wares you see here were planted while still up in Lochinver, with the freestanding frogs being direct descendants of the originals. Over the years the range has built up and hopefully the quality has improved to what is here today. The products are constantly moving forward with new additions all the time, so many visits to this site are encouraged. Stuart Ceramics is now available in many shops and galleries throughout Scotland and the U.K. it has also been sold in shops in the USA.
